Paglajag youth in Siargao

A youth surf camp and community initiative in Anajawan Island, General Luna, Siargao, Philippines

Empowering the Paglajag Youth through surf, light, and opportunity.

More surfboards. More opportunities. More youth in the water.

We’re raising funds for surfboards, solar lanterns, and guided surf instruction for the Paglajag community in Siargao.

The Beginning

After meeting the Paglajag youth, I wanted to do more.

Hi, I’m James.

I’m working on a project to support the Paglajag youth in Anajawan Island, a far-flung island off the mainland of Siargao, Philippines through a surf camp and community empowerment initiative.

It feels unjust that communities surrounded by water often have little access to it in the same way others do.

I am currently looking for partners and donors to help provide at least ten (10) surfboards to the community and organize a two-day surf camp where children can safely learn how to surf in a fun, encouraging environment.

But this initiative is about much more than surfing.

It’s about building confidence, community, and opportunity for the youth of Anajawan. These kids deserve the chance to experience the joy of the ocean that surrounds them and to discover new passions and possibilities.

Exposure to mentors and instructors at a young age can also open doors to surfing not only as a sport or hobby, but potentially even as a livelihood, especially with Siargao’s growing tourism industry.

Another important part of empowering the Anajawan community is providing solar lanterns so children can study at night and families can feel safer after dark.

Many of the youth on the island work tirelessly to pursue scholarships and continue their education in Surigao, a bigger neighboring island with 2 public universities. Access to reliable lighting can make a meaningful difference in helping them achieve their goals and invest in a brighter future for themselves and their community.

My hope is that this initiative grows into something that creates even more opportunities for the community and helps young people feel supported, inspired, and proud of where they come from.

About Me

A personal connection to surfing, community, and Siargao.

Education

International School Manila (ISM)

I’m currently a junior at ISM, and my favorite subjects are Math and English.

I play varsity soccer for my school.

I also play for Kaya Football Club, which has helped me grow in discipline, teamwork, and commitment—values I carry both on the field and in the water.

Experience

Surfing & Community

I started surfing at the age of 4 in Los Angeles, spending time in the waters of Venice and Malibu. What began as something fun quickly became something I truly love.

Now based in Manila, I go to Siargao as often as I can—though never quite as much as I’d like. I’m drawn not just to the waves, but to the culture and the sense of community that comes with it. Surfing continues to be a big part of who I am.

The Full Story

Paglajag means “to sail.”

What began as a small youth-led environmental effort has grown into a movement of learning, service, creativity, and community care.

Paglajag—a Surigaonon term meaning ‘to sail’—is a holistic, community-driven initiative that nurtures values-based education while encouraging active participation and shared responsibility among stakeholders. Anchored in the Department of Education’s core values—Maka-Diyos, Maka-Tao, Makakalikasan, at Makabansa—Paglajag represents both a journey and a celebration of learning and service.

Launched in August 2022 by the Anajawan Elementary School Supreme Elementary Learner Government (SELG), the initiative began with simple environmental efforts such as coastal cleanups, recycling, and engaging children in protecting their natural surroundings. Since then, it has grown into a dynamic, youth-led program built on seven flagship pillars: environmental education, performing arts and creative expression, values formation, literacy development, nutrition support, livelihood initiatives, and scholarships.

From just 13 members, Paglajag has expanded into a vibrant movement of over 150 children and youth—reflecting the community’s shared commitment to education, environmental stewardship, and youth empowerment.

Guided by a deep love for the island and its people, Paglajag promotes sustainable development and community resilience through collaboration, innovation, and active engagement. Its programs take a holistic approach to child and youth development, integrating learning, creativity, well-being, and practical skills.

Paglajag envisions becoming a leading model for holistic and sustainable education in island and coastal communities across the Philippines—empowering young people to grow intellectually, creatively, emotionally, socially, and spiritually, and to become compassionate, self-reliant leaders and changemakers.

Why This Matters in Siargao

More than a surf camp.
A chance to create opportunity close to home.

Siargao is known around the world for its waves.

But many local youth still have limited access to surfboards, organized programs, and opportunities connected to the island’s growing surf culture.

🌊

An island shaped by the ocean

Many youth in Siargao grow up surrounded by waves and nature, yet access to surf equipment and organized activities remains limited.

Limited access after dark

Some households in Anajawan still have limited lighting at night, making it harder for children to study safely and consistently.

🏄

Surfing can create opportunity

Surfing is deeply connected to Siargao’s identity and tourism economy. Learning early can open future opportunities in guiding, coaching, and hospitality.
